Brief overview of the course
This programme requires the buy-in of the whole school, therefore we expect a member of senior management to attend the initial two-day course along with a member of staff. The initial training will equip delegates for their two-year journey, and will then be followed up by a six months catch up and one year review.
There are progress meetings throughout the two year period consisting of:
- a half-day progress check for all delegates after six months
- a full-day progress and application day, a year from the initial training
Schools are eligible to apply for the award at any time during the second year of the programme. Following the award application, an assessment visit takes place to ensure the school has met and maintained the National Nurturing Schools standards. Additional support from our consultancy service is available during the programme at an extra cost.
Rationale
The National Nurturing Schools Programme is a programme that allows staff to develop personally and professionally whilst embedding a nurturing culture throughout their schools, enhancing teaching and learning, promoting healthy outcomes for children and young people. This is achieved by focusing on emotional needs and development as well as academic learning in a whole school environment. The programme is based on the six principles of nurture that have successfully underpinned nurture groups for over 40 years. This programme does not replace nurture groups as a more focused intervention for those identified in need of nurture group provision. You do not need a nurture group in your school to attend the course however many schools have found it useful to implement one at later stage as part of their whole school development.
Target audience
Staff who show a commitment to develop an ethos and culture that is inclusive and who support everyone in and associated with the school.
