NGN launches a Manifesto for Nurture 2017

NGN today launched a ‘Manifesto for Nurture’ calling for transformative action in the next Parliament to support children’s mental health and wellbeing in schools by making nurture an essential component of our education system.
The manifesto has three clear policy recommendations for the next government:
- Invest in nurture groups and similar evidence-based provisions to improve mental health and wellbeing in schools
- Ensure there is a whole school approach to wellbeing
- Support schools to measure the wellbeing of all pupils
Launching the manifesto, NGN Chief Executive Kevin Kibble said:
“We know that mental wellbeing is the key ingredient to succeeding at school. Yet one in ten children and young people currently experience mental health problems and two committees of senior cross-party MPs this week warned that we are seeing cuts to services in schools that support children’s wellbeing.
“It is clear that the status quo is no longer sustainable. We are calling on all MPs in the next Parliament to take transformative action to support children’s mental health and wellbeing in schools by making nurture an essential component of our education system."
Dr Tina Rae has over 30 years’ experience working with children, adults and families in both clinical and educational contexts within local authorities and specialist educational services. She said:
“Nurture groups have proven to be an effective intervention both in primary and secondary schools, giving vital support to some of our most vulnerable pupils to help them overcome social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. I highly recommend investing more resources to support nurture group provision and nurturing interventions and practice across the country.”
James Roach, Headteacher of Laurance Haines School in Watford, the country’s first recipient of the National Nurturing Schools Award said:
“The Nurturing Schools Programme has enabled our school to use the principles of nurture to focus on the emotional needs and development as well as academic learning of all students. We are proud to be able to enhance teaching and learning, promoting healthy outcomes, resilience and improved wellbeing for all children.
“Supporting schools to become Nurturing Schools will enable more schools to play their vital role in promoting and protecting children and young people’s mental health and wellbeing”
NGN is calling on all prospective political candidates to support the mission to improve the social, emotional health and wellbeing of children and young people through nurture groups and nurturing interventions in schools.
