Description
This resource will help you to build the knowledge and skills needed to support the emotional health and mental wellbeing of children and young people.
This publication allows professionals who work with children and young people to:
- Learn relevant therapeutic approaches and skills;
- Feel confident that they have developed the appropriate skills and knowledge base to identify at-risk students;
- Help prevent the escalation of any perceived difficulties and problems; and
- Fulfil Inclusion (Section 4) of the National Curriculum (2014) – lessons can be planned to ensure that there are no barriers to every pupil achieving.
According to a 2013 survey of 844 education staff by the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL), there is a deficit in training to support students with mental health problems- only a fifth (21%) of teachers get regular training which they rate as good or adequate, and nearly 39% said they did not get any relevant training in their initial teacher training. Considering that teachers are now more likely to be in contact amongst children with mental health problems than primary health care, mental health services and social services combined (Ford 2014) it is of utmost importance that teachers receive the appropriate training.
This innovative and comprehensive publication covers topics such as understanding attachment and trauma, managing anger or building resilience using tools of positive psychology.
