The Theory and Practice of Nurture Groups – 13th,14th March and 1st May 2025 (East Riding Council, Group 2)

The Theory and Practice of Nurture Groups’ training course is credit rated by the Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework (SCQF.) It is a 3-day course, which is divided into two parts (see below) and is delivered via a mix of Zoom sessions and learning platform activities*.

Part 1: 2 consecutive days – 13th and 14th March 2025

Part 2: 1 day (4 – 6 weeks later) – 1st May 2025

Staff requirements: 1 member of staff per school in each cohort

Each delegate will receive the relevant resources:

• A copy of the The Boxall Profile Handbook (Revised) and Beyond the Boxall Profile: Strategies and Resources (Revised) OR (depending on their choice) The Boxall Profile for Young People and Beyond the Boxall Profile for Young People.

• Assignment guidance

What you’ll learn

This programme focuses on the theory of nurture, and its significance and implications for good practice. Key topics include:

The theoretical framework underpinning nurture groups and nurturing approaches

Nurture Principles

• The relevance of early childhood experiences on the learning, development, and wellbeing of children and young people.

• How attachment theory and neuroscience underpin the Six Principles of Nurture and nurture practice.

The Boxall Profile 

• The theoretical basis for The Boxall Profile.

• How to undertake a Boxall Profile Assessment and interpret its findings to plan a response to pupils’ needs.

Assessment and certification

After three days of training, you will be encouraged to complete an assignment which must be submitted within 12 months of completing the training.

If you achieve a pass grade for your assignment, you will gain 13 SCQF points at Level  8.

The assignment structure:

Part 1 – Child Study (2,000 words)

Part 2 – Reflection on Professional Practice (2,000 words)

Part 3 – Portfolio (An appendix of relevant documents)

Delegates are provided with assignment guidance and framework.

Eligibility 

This is a training programme for anyone who wants to establish a nurture group, or for practitioners who work with children with behavioural, emotional and/or social and developmental needs. It is also useful for educators who are looking to instill a ‘nurturing’ ethos within an educational setting.

The course is credit rated by the Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework (SCQF); delegates who complete the training and pass the final assignment will gain 13 SCQF points at Level 8.

*Please note that the live sessions will be conducted via Zoom. It is preferable for you to participate in a quiet space, where you are unlikely to be disturbed. Depending on your workplace’s security system, you might also find it tricky to access Zoom, in which case we recommend accessing the course from home (or any alternative location).
