How relational and inclusive is your school? It’s a question many school leaders may be reflecting on recently due to the increased government focus on inclusion and belonging. This year so far we’ve seen the release of the Schools White Paper which recommended Inclusion Bases in every school; the publishing of new Ofsted inspection criteria in which Inclusion was a key inspection area; and most recently the announcement of the Inclusive Mainstream Fund, paid directly to schools to fund inclusion efforts.
We know that as educators you have a lot on your plate already. We also know that many of you are well on your way to becoming nurturing, inclusive spaces. It can be helpful to take a step back and review what you’re doing well, and where there is still room for improvement.
The nurture school checklist
Are your pupils taught to recognise emotions and name them? Are safety nets in place for transitions?
We’ve created this checklist for you to reflect on where you’re at on your nurturing journey. You'll be prompted to fill in each question based on how it applies in your school, and each question can be self-scored from 1-10 according to how accurately they describe your whole-school setting.
We recommend printing the checklist and completing with a pen, alongside a colleague.
